WBU Glen Mills Assists Newlin GM With Storm Recovery

The severe storms in early August - two in less than a week - have inflicted quite a brutal one-two punch to our community's historical treasure, Newlin Grist Mill (NGM). Newlin has been a part of the historical fabric and culture of Delaware County since the early eighteenth century - 1704 to be exact - and we want to help it come back stronger than before to continue its mission of preserving its land (160 acres) and its historic buildings for the pleasure and education of the public.

Wild Birds Unlimited (WBU) Glen Mills is taking action by starting a two-pronged campaign to:

1) Organize a group of volunteers to help with clean-up and rebuilding of the trails and landscape around the park.

2) Lead a three month donation drive for NGM to assist with the significant costs associated with their re-build (see details below).

Volunteers Needed
If you are able, we encourage you to dedicate some of your time on September 12th to help with park clean-up and restoration chores.  Details are bulleted below:

  • AM (9am-12pm) and a PM (1pm-3pm) group desired
  • Maximum of 10 people per group
  • Work would consist of raking, shoveling or sawing
  • Volunteers are asked to bring their own water, gloves and possibly tools if you have them
  • Please email us at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer on Saturday, September 12th.
  • Please provide the number of attendees (if more than one), time slot, and age(s) of volunteers so we may place individuals in an appropriate group.
  • Email is the preferred method of communication, but you may also call us at 484-800-4941 if you have any questions. Please leave a message if the machine picks up as we have limited staff to handle calls.

Donation Campaign
Starting September 1st, Wild Birds Unlimited of Glen Mills is excited to kick off the NGM "First Fifty Donors" donation campaign! The way it works is we will provide a gift bag with some cool bird feeding goodies to the first fifty (50) donors of at least $25 to the NGM donation site .  Click here to donate to NGM.

To claim your gift you must do the following:

  • Put "WBU Gift" in the comments section in the NGM donation page.
  • Bring your emailed receipt from NGM (print or electronic copy) to our store in Glen Mills.  Click here to find our store.
  • You must come to the store to claim your gift with either an electronic or printed copy of your donation receipt. Gifts will not be mailed.
  • The first fifty eligible donors will receive the bag with goodies on a first come, first served basis.
  • No need to worry, however, if you didn't make the first fifty. We will start a whole new campaign for the months of October and November with different bird feeding goodies! Just like the first, the ensuing month's gifts will be limited to the first fifty donors of that month. We will announce the gifts being offered right before each campaign begins.
  • For September, we are giving away the following: an introductory Bark Butter feeder, a 1.22 lb. tub of Bark Butter, a sample bag of Bark Butter Bits and a reusable WBU shopping bag.

Of course we and NGM are appreciative of any donation amount or volunteer effort you can afford, but please help out in any way that you can.

Newlin is such a treasure to the community - we will prove it to you. Each week, we will highlight an aspect of what NGM contributes to our community in our weekly email and Facebook post called "The Many Facets of Newlin Grist Mill". Keep your eye out for some special giveaways in those as well!

So let's keep it strong for future generations. It defines who we are. We hope you can join us in our effort to make our community a little bit better for everyone.

Most sincerely,

Chris & Lisa Weaver, owners
& the staff of WBU Glen Mills
