What makes native plants so special? It's the coevolution of these plants along with local insects, birds and other animals over millions of years that has created mostly balanced, mutually benefircial relationships among all these species.
For instance, a single Carolina Chickadee harvests thousands of native soft-bodied moth caterpillars during spring to help their young survive. These moth caterpillars, in turn, rely on the leaves and stems of a handful of species of native plants to completee their natural life cycle. Without those plants, the moths would cease to exist. And without the moth larvae, the Chickadee will have to find other sources of food for their young, which will likely lessen their chances for survival. It's these complex, cascading, ecological relationships that underpin the mysterious makings of nature.
So, we thought it would be a good idea to help you make your yard or patio a friendlier place for your birds by replacing some of that grass -or adding some pots to your patio- with some native perennial plants. You can help the birds and beautify your yard all in one shot!
We have two batches of plants for sale this spring. One arriving in April 18th, and the other on May 5th. All plants are plug-sized and sourced locally from North Creek Nursery in Landenberg, PA and most are native to North America with a few non-native varieties that are non-invasive with excellent ecological value and a longer flowering period.
Our sale will take place April 18 through the end of May/early June or while supplies last. But come on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, and get a free plant with purchase!
